The NHRA Springnationals started in 1965. It was held at Bristol, TN 1965-1967, the event then moved to Englishtown, NJ for 1968. The NHRA then moved it to Dallas, TX from 1969 - 1971. It was then moved to National Trail Raceway for the 1972 season and that is where it became one of the largest and most prestigious events on the tour. Even after NHRA changed the name of the event to the Pontiac Excitement Nationals, the fans still called it the Springnationals. In 2002, the NHRA used the name Springnationals for their event at Houston Raceway park and it was used until the final event at the facility in 2022.
