Winston became the title sponsor of NHRA’s premier drag racing series in 1975, beginning one of the longest and most recognizable sponsorships in drag racing history.

Backed by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, the Winston partnership brought increased prize money, promotion, and national exposure to the sport. The series became known as the NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series, an era that featured legendary champions including Don Garlits, Don Prudhomme, Bob Glidden, Shirley Muldowney, Kenny Bernstein, and John Force. Winston remained the title sponsor through the 2001 season, ending a 27-season association that helped shape the growth of professional NHRA drag racing.
